in around 2006 or 2007 somebody told me that the world was going to end in december 2012, and for all of the years following i was obsessed with the claim (though not believing it to be true). this song is specifically about the french town of burgarach, that for reasons completely disconnected from mayan scripture was singled out (on a web forum probably) as the only place on earth that would survive the end times. as a result, this tiny village with a population of a few hundred was flooded with a huge number of conspiracy theorists. one was observed as being sat in a rubber dinghy in the middle of a field, awaiting predicted floods.
(song is a post-script to 'the end times', from #2)
lyrics
under ice
hysterics entice
all the build up to the end
of life
was sensual
bustling around
i was knocked down a flight
when you caught me out that night
sat motionless in the dinghy
and unless calendars have failed us
our sons await a century
and even symbols
and deflated temples
rot at the
surface; the upwards curve
in mesoamerica
the tears are real
we begin
the upwards curve
and i didn't know
what bishop said
it recedes and then catches
on a fragment of fate
and half a pillar of hate

As usual, Kirby manipulates various interwar records to fit a cavalcade of emotional states: blissful (B1, E8), tragic (D2, D5), frantic (E1, E6), and just plain horrifying (F3, G1, H1, K1). gjoe52

The great underlying instrumentation paired with Florence's droll stream of consciousness lyrics make this album stand out. It feels so personal and confessional. Favorite tracks are Strong Feelings and Leafy. I've heard Scratchard Lanyard on alt radio and love that one as well. tofupotpie

I don't hear a lot of this kind of music, gives me ,loose Sonic Youth vibes. Everything about it is cool, like too cool for school cool. I want to skip class and spray paint an alley with these people. Kyle Zarnoch
